Walking Western Avenue

We live and work in what you’d call the northern edge of South-Central Los Angeles, in one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, West Adams.  Western Avenue, the main north-south artery nearest us, is one of my favorite streets in Los Angeles. If you want to get a feel for this city, there’s no better way to do it than to travel the length of Western Avenue.  From the exclusive girls school up in the hills on its northern end to the hustle and flow of the ‘hood in the south, and every immigrant dream in between, Western is a ribbon of culture lining the belly of this beast of a city.

PFFlyers1I’m doing a photo essay on Western Avenue for a client of ours. In walking Western yesterday, I had all kinds of rewarding encounters. A street poet named Ron shared a poem he wrote, called Shine that was amazing; a restaurant owner grilling chicken on the sidewalk shared stories of his adventures in the real estate biz; a beauty shop owner opened the door after hours to pose for a photo; a kid showed me his python; another kid getting a tattoo showed me his cool shoes–PF Flyers, a brand I used to wear when I was a kid!; a clothing entrepreneur named Prince confided his strategy for pumping up slow sales; a dude named Noon and I had a half-hour discussion on privacy issues, the school system, the prison system, and the relations between the police and the people of South Central–all because he wouldn’t let me take his picture.

No matter how deeply we dive into virtual worlds and other dimensions of reality, walking around and having conversations with folks is still the best way to learn something you didn’t know.

As Viola Spolin said, “Act on environment, and environment will act on you.”

Social Media Week – Los Angeles

SMW3I’m producing, or helping with, four GameChangers events next week as part of Social Media Week in Los Angeles:

1) A two hour GameChangers workshop, ‘The Revolution Will Be Improvised:  Brand Narratives in the Networked World,’ at KCET television studios.  This will be a quick introduction into the fundamentals of improvisation for business communication, and an exploration of how, to be effective, brands must be prepared to improvise their narratives in the social media space.

2) A workshop billed as ‘Communication Trifecta:  Levels of Meaning in Presentations’ at the Institute for Multimedia Literacy.  This will be for students at USC who are learning to use new media tools and platforms to help them ‘get their show on the road,’ as my dad used to say.  We’re going to focus on how to give good presentations.  (Hint:  It’s not the presentation, it’s the presenter.)

3) A science communication workshop based on biomimicry–using processes found in nature to produce sustainable designs and business strategies–at the Viterbi School of Engineering at USC.  The workshop continues a program begun by the actor Alan Alda and science journalist K.C. Cole to help scientists improve their communication skills.  Cole, who was mentored by (and has written a book about) Frank Oppenheimer, creator of the Exploratorium in San Francisco, will be co-facilitating with me.  Alda will be viewing segments of the workshop via teleconference from Stony Brook U. in New York.

4)  A program on fan culture hosted by the Cimarron Group that will be moderated by the legendary Henry Jenkins of M.I.T. and USC, who’s like a Professor of Fanthropology.  The program will look at the ways that fan culture affects the marketing of motion pictures.

Only the GameChangers workshop at KCET is open to the public. Ultimately, all human discourse is social media.  The fact that we have new platforms for doing it doesn’t guarantee we’re going to be any good at it.  For organizations and individuals alike, getting good at social media means getting good at human skills like listening, finding agreement, and synthesizing different points of view into a brand new whole.  That takes improvisation.  And that is why GameChangers is so committed to Social Media Week.  Social media platforms are the stages, and every stage needs its play.

Social Media Week in Los Angeles is being produced by Erick Brownstein and The New Agency.   The event began last year as the brainchild of Toby Daniels and his company, Crowdcentric, in New York City.

GameChanger of the Month, November 2009

The GameChanger of the Month for November goes to Jimmy Biblarz, Mimi Rodriguez, David Kamins and Maya Festinger of Hamilton High School and the teacher, Christina Gutierrez, whose job they saved.   By organizing a campaign that included (administration approved) student protests, stories in the media, a letter-writing campaign, and a formal presentation to the School Board, they were able to keep ‘Miss G’ at their school.MissG2

It is evident from reading the story in the L.A. Times that Gutierrez is the kind of player anyone would want on their team.  It was not the loss of a teacher that stirred the students to action, as much as it was the threat of losing someone who genuinely cares about them.  Biblarz felt extra heartache when he heard Gutierrez was getting laid off (because she lacked seniority).  When his younger sister, Veronica, was out of school for two months with an illness, Miss G made sure she got her homework assignments, and that she was all caught up when she returned to the classroom.  “She just actually cares,” Veronica Biblarz says in the Times article. “Not like the fake pretending to care. . . . She takes it seriously.”

Interesting, isn’t it, that the student calls out ‘fake pretend caring?’   A fact of which every brand should be aware: the b.s. detectors of the networked audience are fine-tuned.  And there is no substitute for authenticity.

One of my improvisation teachers, Scot Robinson, said one day in class, “I hate people who generalize.” He delivered it with such deadpan perfect timing that it got a laugh, but getting a laugh was not the point, the point was this:   Give the gift of specificity. Don’t be a generalizer generalizing.  To hold your audience’s interest, be unique, be remarkable, buck stereotypes.  You cannot accomplish this if you are ‘general’ about your role, your character, or your game.   You cannot accomplish it if you limit yourself to what’s in the script, the employee manual or the teacher’s guide.  If the people in your audience feel they already know you, you will fail to hold their attention.  It’s when they do not know you, but rather, want to know more about you, that you win them over.  It is when they see the the world a little differently because of you, that you create value, and make a difference in their lives.

What began two years ago as a ’stunt’ in Sydney, Australia, where the local World Wildlife Fund members rallied citizens, politicians, businesses and civic organizations to get lights turned off in Sydney Harbor for an hour, an event they called ‘Earth Hour‘, this year on March 28 grew into a worldwide event with over 1,800 cites around the world and an estimated one billion people participating. On the radio, the reporter is talking to a first-time high school principal of a new charter school in New Orleans…

As I’m always on the lookout for scenes that demonstrate improvisation at work, the story gets my attention. The woman is starting a job she’s never done before, yet clearly with the confidence that she is prepared for the experience. That’s an improviser talking. I turn up the volume…

The subject of the story is Channa Cook. Her age is 28. She and Kristin Leigh Moody are the co-founders of Sojourner Truth Academy in New Orleans, a new charter school that opened to its first class in August (then had to close its doors for awhile to let Hurricane Gustav blow through, but is now open again).
