C-Suite to Street

With each passing week, we hear more about the application of improvisation to business.  American companies, from core to edge, from the C-suite to the street, are becoming more conscious of the need to be agile in a networked business environment, and that means learning how to improvise better.   These companies (excluding the already-agile Silicon Valley/tech and financial sectors) are coming to the realization that in a networked world, it is impossible to script for every scenario we encounter.  There’s too much too much choice, change and transacting in the marketplace.  In this environment, improvisation is the most fundamental business skill there is.  At GameChangers™, we call it a system for producing positive outcomes from unforeseen circumstances.

The anecdotal evidence–what we’re seeing and experiencing over the past three months:

- A study in the magazine Science co-authored by MIT scientists cites a 30-40% improvement in performance in groups that apply collective intelligence to problem-solving.  This is another perfectly legit definition for what improvisation is:  The conscious application of collective intelligence to the solving of problems.

- A major airline hires GameChangers™ to improve its customer relations for its sales staff.  In 3 months, offices that institute the GameChangers™system show a 90% reduction in customer complaints.

- Oakley yes-ands the 33 Trapped Chilean Miners by giving them all a pair of their grooviest sunglasses to wear when they exit the mine, demonstrating that improvised branding has a huge ROI advantage over traditional media models.

- Legendary improvisation-trained actor Alan Alda establishes a program with science writer KC Cole to teach scientists how to communicate better using improvisation.  Alda’s  program is co-located at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, USC’s Annenberg School of Journalism, and Stony Brook U. in New York.  I’m honored to continue the program in a workshop exploring biomimicry (in which we riff on exercises taught to me by the brilliant Belina Raffy in the U.K.) as part of Social Media Week in L.A..

- The ‘Old Spice Man’ viral video campaign, partly designed by a social media manager who attended several GameChangers® workshops and a copywriter who plays jazz trumpet, boosts Old Spice sales by 1200% in three months.  This suggests that brands must begin to measure ROI not by platform, but by narrative.

- The Applied Improvisation Network holds its annual meeting in Amsterdam in September.  Success stories abound!

- Renowned London-based organizational expert, Peter Robertson, is adapting  the AEM-cubeanalysis tool created by his group, Human Insight Ltd., to include metrics for how well large organizations, and their employees individually, improvise.

- We hear that two divisions of a large global consulting firm, unbeknownst to one another, hire improvisers to conduct workshops for their managers in two different U.S. cities.  The company’s training staff, hearing of this, requests a proposal from one of its vendors for a company-wide program for more than 12,000 employees that is based on improvisation.

- The Spirit of Football®, an improvised narrative that explores the theme, “One Ball, One World,” has already signed its first two sponsors for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, putting them exactly three years ahead of the pace they were on for this year’s World Cup.

- A Harvard Business Review article on Pixar University and its director, Randy Nelson, cites ‘plussing,’ which is an old term Walt Disney used, as an essential part of its culture.  Plussing is another word for  ‘yes-and,’ a basic concept of improvisation.

This is just a partial tip of one iceberg, the one we see from our little boat at GameChangers™.  There are a lot more icebergs in the ocean than what we can see, and let’s be honest, there are a lot more icebergs in the ocean than there have ever been before.

Consequently, there has never been a better time, no matter what profession you’re in, to be an improviser.  Play on!IcebergField1

I speak occasionally to Steven Lisberger, who directed the landmark motion picture, TRON.  Naturally enough, the conversation usually comes around to cyberspace and how, as Steven puts it, “TRON came true.”  Lately, we’ve been talking a lot about the role of story and storytellers in the networked world.   Steven has a way of boiling things down to their essence.  Sometimes I call him Obi-Wan.  Here’s some Jedi from our most recent conversation:

“For most of mankind’s existence, our subconscious mind has been hidden.  Now it’s on full display in the network.  Everything you can dream of is there and accessible instantly.  And the question is, what are we going to do with it?”

“People need a new way in.”

“If one aspect of work, access to information, has gotten infinitely easier, the laws of physics tell us that another aspect, one that maybe we don’t recognize yet, has gotten infinitely harder.  We expect things to always get easier, but that’s not necessarily true.”

“On one side of the equation you have the swarm, the hive mind, whatever you want to call it.  And on the other, you have all these tools, and this demand for productivity.  If you don’t know what you’re doing, it will get revealed quicker.  So you have to really know what you’re doing.  The swarm has to be grounded in capability.”

“The network and the tools are amazing.  If people learn how to use the network and the tools, they’ll be amazing, too.”

“One result of networks is the democratization of quality.  When all content is pumped out and made accessible, it creates a kind of middling format.  It leads to a common denominator effect.  This is why elitism matters.  Not just anyone can tell a good story, or create a good design.”

“Intellectual bullying perpetuates the wrong argument.”

“With improvisation, you can do a scene where one person plays the landlord and the other person plays the tenant who’s behind on the rent.  Then those two people reverse roles, and from that process, you learn how to go about resolving the problem.  In business, that never happens.  No one switches sides or changes roles.  If you play for the Blue Team, that’s the team you stay on.  If you’re on the Yellow Team, you stay on that team, and you argue for that side.  And you just keep on having the same argument, and it’s terrible, because nothing changes, and nothing ever gets resolved.”

“What you’re doing with GameChangers is fracturing and realigning the sides of the argument so that problems can get solved.”

“The subconscious mind doesn’t recognize time.  It exists in a permanent state of ‘now.’  In this sense the subconscious mind is like a child, who doesn’t know anything but ‘right now.’  When the subconscious mind makes itself visible and instantly accessible in the network, and everything exists in a state of now, it breeds immaturity.  We begin operating at the level of awareness of an 11 year old.  Maturity is something you can only get to over time.  It’s linear in that sense.  The ethics and perspective that come with time and maturity are what’s missing in this environment.”

Three Business Scenes Analyzed

Scene #1: Bad Games in the U.K. According to the BBC, criminal fraud cases in the U.K. are up by 14% in 2008 over 2007. The top crooked games are boiler room scams, credit card fraud, tax cheating and identify theft. The Beeb says the total yearly cost to victims is over 504 billion Euro. Analysis: First of all, it’s a statistic, so there are several ways it can be read. Maybe cheating is up, but it’s just as likely prosecution is up 14% while crime remained steady. Or maybe crime has dropped by 5% but prosecution is up 19%. And this is the crime we know about. Maybe the crime we don’t know about is up 200%. Who can tell? We don’t know about it. My guess, just from what we’re learning daily about the games the financial industry has been playing, is that crime we don’t know about is hockey-sticking. (more…)

Mrs. Berners-Lee Will Like My Book

Last Thursday I went to see Sir Tim Berners-Lee, widely-acknowledged to be the inventor of the World Wide Web, speak at the Annenberg School of Communications at USC.Berners Lee 1

In a very crowded room (people are sitting on the floor and standing in doorways), I spot Jonathan Taplin, who is on the faculty at USC and has made a career out of playing and changing the game at a stratospheric level. He produced Martin Scorsese’s first film, Mean Streets, and The Last Waltz, also directed by Scorsese, one of the greatest music performance films of all time. I was in Africa with Taplin in the early 1980s when he began studying the Walt Disney Company’s financials and alerted his college roommate, Sid Bass, to Disney’s dormant potential, initiating a series of events that resulted in twenty years of unprecedented growth for the Disney brand, and billions of dollars in new wealth for its stakeholders. He helped engineer the leveraged buyout of Viacom by Sumner Redstone in 1996 and raised over $100 million in financing for early video streaming ventures, including his own experimental work with a company called Intertainer. I say hello and give him a copy of GameChangers. “This is very interesting,” he says, tapping the cover of the book. “I’m writing a book with a similar approach to geopolitics and the financial markets.” To have Jonathan Taplin tell you the two of you are in the same game is like Jay-Z telling you you’re street. Dear Stan:

I share this letter with you as a former supporting player in the Merrill-Lynch performance. In 1999, I spent a lot of time helping Merrill Lynch lay the foundation for its online securities business in Japan. It was, all-in-all, a fabulous experience. Not the ‘laying the foundation part,’ that was a pain in the ass, what with the language and cultural differences (most Japanese mistook the Merrill-Lynch bull for a dog), and the woefully outdated legacy system we inherited from Yamaichi Securities.
