Ollie Johnston died Monday at the age of 95. Ollie was the last surviving member of Disney’s ‘Nine Old Men’, the legendary animators who injected life and character into drawings on paper as no one ever had. Words cannot begin to describe the veneration a certain generation of us who began our careers working at Disney had for these men, for Ollie and the rest of them who were still around at the time. All geniuses in their own right.
And when I say geniuses, I’m not talking about animation, although that was certainly part of it. These guys were geniuses at life. Their lives were rich in every respect, filled with adventure, fun, passion, family, and drenched in love. Too often, we think of geniuses as people who excel in one thing, when in fact it is life in its entirety that informs us and guides us to our greatness. (more…)

AFTER THAT PEOPLE BEGAN PAYING ATTENTION. (more…)

When I saw CBS promoting a 60 Minutes interview with a Pentagon official who called something a ‘”gamechanger,” I went to the CBS website to see what was up. Minding the brand, dontcha know.

Turns out the Pentagon offical is Sue Payton, the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force, and the gamechanger she’s talking about is a ray gun, a weapon the military calls the Active Denial System (ADS). I have read enough comic books and seen enough Star Trek to know that any kind of ray gun (or phaser) is automatically a gamechanger. No questions asked. When a ray gun shows up in the scene, something is going to change soon. So I agree 100% with Sue Payton. (more…)

My friend, Corey McAfee, a young player in the Nashville music scene, called TuneCore to my attention. It is a service that places music with online retailers and returns an unprecedented royalty to artists. Here is a brand that senses how to play the music game in the Networked World. When it comes to outstanding improvisation, TuneCore is right up there with Tina Fey.

Let’s break it down. (more…)
